Great preview by the Murphmeister: Fat Lady, Start Your Engines (City Preview)

Martin O’Neill says of tonight’s opponents Manchester City: ‘There is no doubt the game will be extremely difficult for us….Manchester City have spent heavily in the January transfer window with not only this season but future ones in mind too. And they will certainly, within six or seven months, be a force to be reckoned with.’ Warning ‘Our defence have to be on top form.’

Anyone going to the World Cup in South Africa, or anyone not going because of the cost/safety etc? The Mercury are doing something on this, if the above applies to you, you could contact adam.aspinall@sundaymercury.net and he’ll get in touch (it wouldn’t be a major hassle or long interviews etc!)

Oooh, how nice, a non controversial and positive bit of news! :o) Wilfred Bouma managed 90 minutes as the Villa reserves beat Chelsea 4-3. Freddy dislocated his ankle in a most horrific fashion (I was in line with it and it really didn’t look nice!) during the Inter Two Bob (oh God, don’t mention Europe!) game v Odense back in July and has fought to get back to fitness since. A bit of speculation from the Mirror with regards to a possible John Carew exit in the summer. Some say no way jose, I say possible…! John Carew Set For Villa Exit Rumour

Hot on the heels of the news that Wilfred Bouma and Nigel Hokey-Cokey are back from injury, Villa look set for another massive boost. Defensive rock and world class defender Martin Laursen could be set to return in time for the Manchester United game at the start of April. Such very good news this as there had been whispers this injury was possibly going to be another bad one and one that he might not return from. Glad that rumour will now be put to bed! Vital Villa’s Dan Jones takes a look at the current squad in comparison to the last side to finish 4th in the Premiership Aston Villa 2008/09 v Aston Villa 1995/96

One report I read said that Spurs will have a summer clearout with former Blackburn winger David Bentley included. Another – with no quotes or substance – says Villa will be after him. He was linked before his £15m move to Spurs (who if I remember rightly he supported as a kid) and I think we got as far as contacting Bentley who was only interested in a move to London at the time – hey it is all coming back to me now, that is right… His girlfriend (or was it wife – quality journalism this) also preferred London as she suffers from an illness and is treated at a London hospital + family etc… ok I’m bored now, basically he might or might not be being sold and we might or might not be interested in signing him…! lol Sod it, amused me for a couple of minutes !

Martin O’Neill says the squad is having fun shaking the top four and hopes to end up replacing one of the established teams come the end of the season. The Villa boss told the official site: ‘The players are really enjoying it. It is great and there is a tremendous excitement among the players about the run-in. I think that’s probably because we haven’t been in this position before. That’s the great thing. The big four sides – Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool – have been there on merit now for some considerable time. They generally know what it’s all about.’ Full quotes: O’Neill Enjoying Rattling Cages

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has Villa in his sights after beating the Baggies on Tuesday night. He said: ‘I still believe that in the few draws we had, if we’d taken those chances, we would still be in the title race. But now we want to focus on reducing the gap to Aston Villa and other teams and try to win our games.’

Curtis Davies says that Villa should go to Man City tonight with confidence and go for the win. With Arsenal now only 3 points behind and after our 2-2 draw with Stoke, this is yet another must win – aren’t they all? He told AVTV: ‘It is not the time now to start slipping up and we want to stay strong until the end of the season and stay in there.’ And on City ‘It is not going to be easy. They are the type of team that will open up. It is going to be tough for us to defend and we need to be aware of them. Hopefully we can come through it and come away with a few goals and win.’
