Reports in The Mirror today say that Newcastle have joined the race with Manchester City and Aston Villa for Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell. 24-year-old Sidwell is out of contract at the end of the season and has a clause in his current deal apparently allows him to speak with any club who offer more than £2.3m.

Martin O’Neill has said he doesn’t know what will happen in relation to a possible return for James Milner in January. The Newcastle winger was a late target for O’Neill in the summer and it was only a last minute re-call by the Magpies Chairman Freddy Shepherd that prevented a permanent move for Milner. Scans have confirmed that Thomas Sorensen hasn’t broken his collarbone in international duty for Denmark. Stuart Taylor is on standby to deputise on Saturday. Taylor last played in the first team 11 months ago in the 3-1 loss to Manchester City.
