Martin O’Neill said of the season plus the summer coming: ‘We’ve ended the season with 60 points and in most years that would have been enough to qualify automatically for Europe. Last season we would have walked it and even seventh place got automatically into Europe 12 months ago. ‘So from that aspect it’s disappointing but it shouldn’t mask the fact that we’ve come on leaps and bounds from last season.’ Adding: ‘To do it with the smallest squad in the Premier League has made it particularly impressive but that’s something we would want to address in the summer.’
Villa have a holy trinity of players named in the 30 man England squad. Fabio Capello has selected Gareth Barry, Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor for the end of season games including USA at Wembley (May 28) and an away trip to Trinidad & Tobago (June 1) Full squad: Click Here
Scott Carson, in a report for the Sunday Mercury, admits he was better at rugby than goalkeeper as a kid. Some would say that statement is still true, not me though, oooh no, I’ve turned my bitchy mode off!

The Barry saga:
Tom Jones look-alike mini-me Rafa Benitez has told icLiverpool that he can’t understand why Martin O’Neill has been so angry over their conversations relating to Villa skipper Gareth Barry. The Liverpool boss said: ‘I think the right approach when you want to sign a player is to talk to the manager. I was talking to Martin O’Neill, I said we would like to sign Gareth Barry and asked what the situation was. He just said he needed to talk to the owner and I said okay. He will not have any problems with his supporters because he never said to me he wanted to sell Barry.’ Full article: Tom Jones mini-me Is Confused At MON Anger
Didn’t realise Villa had a demigod, but apparently we do. Not only that, he has a vision. Super. I had double vision once, boy oh boy what a night that was. I digress… Gareth Barry, according to the official site, has a Villa Vision. Now would he have the vision if he was about to leave? Hopefully not! He says of Villa, after qualifying for the Inter two bob, that Villa want to get back to where ‘we belong’, in Europe.
Martin O’Neill has also praised the player for not getting sidetracked: ‘Gareth might have been affected by the speculation last week, but I thought he was back to his best yesterday (v West Ham) – he did splendidly for us. You wouldn’t have thought he had anything else other than a win on his mind.’ Full article: A Villa Demigod With A Vision….Apparently!
Martin O’Neill on the transfer saga of Barry said ‘Gareth has two years of his contact left to run. It was pretty interesting that apparently there was an offer in for Steven Gerrard, I believe from some Italian team. The first thing Liverpool came out with was that Gerrard has a number of years left to run on his contract, so there you go. We might just come out with the same sort of message. We will do our utmost to do so and that’s what the fans would like.’: O’Neill Doesn’t Think Barry Should Move

So we have a run in the inter two bob to look forward to. The format has changed so we are only one two-legged tie away from the Uefa qualifying round. Our opponents will come from Northern Ireland, Denmark or Finland. According to the official site the first leg will be away July 19 or 20.
The News of the World claim that Martin O’Neill is returning to his old haunt, recently relegated Leicester City to try to prize away 17-year-old defender Joe Mattock and 20-year-old Richard Stearman, who can play at right-back and centre-back for around £2.5million. Rumour rating? Both players are England U21 internationals, so these links do make sense judging by what MON has been doing since his arrival.
Patrik Berger has said he wants one more season in the Premiership. However it will not be at Villa! Full article: Click Here
