James Milner says the fact he spent the first few weeks on the bench at Villa convinced him the competition for places was healthy at Villa and that he’d made the right move leaving Newcastle United. He told AVTV: ‘My first thought when the move looked like happening was hoping that the deal would go through this time – and wouldn’t get stopped at the last minute.’ This was after he sat in the managers office at Bodymoor only to be told the then owner of the Magpies Freddie Shepherd (who is currently trying to buy them back) had changed his mind and re-called him. Milner added, ”After that, I just really wanted to force my way into the team. It took me a bit of time to do that – I had to work my way in. That was a good sign – waiting my turn rather than just walking straight in. The players were doing well and totally deserved to keep their place in the side. You have to earn the right to play.’ He also says he feels he is at a big club with Villa.

Real madness. I am not sure if the Spanish laugh much, as I can’t actually remember ever hearing much Spanish tittering in my time but if we can defy a few pedants and call Barcelona Spain, then I bet they have been guffawing in the streets this week, as the Catalans witnessed Real Madrid having a spend-thrift shit-fit, in their attempt to heal the agonies of seeing Barcelona not only win the Champions League with enough strutting panache to make a flamenco dancer look diffident, but then having to read the outpouring of accolades which followed, in their native Castilian too. Starting to get hungry now, not had breakfast yet and already it is lunch time. The sacrifices I make for the Villa Times eh?!?!

Vital Villan: Emile Heskey is perhaps more so a marmite type player than anyone in the game when it comes to fans. You either love the guy or hate him. However it is well documented that he is very much respected by fellow professionals and coaches all over the land. This week has seen him receive praise from both Frank Lampard and John Carew. Lampard and Carew Praise Emile Heskey

Suppose the next question is, tomato soup or oxtail soup, or beans with rice? Curry tonight, so we are sorted in that department. We? Yes, me, myself and I.

Vital Villan: I hate the summer. Brad Guzan has said he’s happy to continue flying the flag of successful American goalkeepers in the Premiership. Speaking on the official site, Guzan explains he has no idea why American goalkeepers seem to be so successful in England but as he’s said many a time since joining us he’s been more than happy to follow in the footsteps of Keller, Howard, Hahnemann and rival for the No 1 shirt, Friedel.
