A great season preview by our very own Young_Jonah: Premiership Preview – 2008/09 Season

Yesterday I had a call from the Channel Four website asking for my predictions for the new season. Obviously I’m not one for expressing opinions, but decided I’d try to shed my shy tendencies (stop laughing at the back) and answer them! So here is my feeble preview ! :o) Villa To Be Dark Horses?

Gabby Agbonlahor has followed fast on the heels of John Carew and signed a new deal. Gabby, who scored a great goal against icantspelltheirname last night in our 4-1 demolition of the Icelandic team has signed a four-year deal, meaning he is contracted to Villa until the summer of 2012. ‘I was happy to sign the new deal. I had three years left and to add the extra year means a lot. I’m enjoying my football at the moment and hopefully that can continue. It’s nice to get my future sorted and to be here for the next four years means a lot. Hopefully I can keep improving and then I can stay for longer. I think my game has definitely improved over the last year. If you look at my performances I think I’m still improving as a player and I’ve got a lot more to achieve. I’m not at my peak yet.’

John Carew added another year to his current deal: Hulk Extends Stay At Villa The . JC told the official site: ‘I am very happy to make the contract a year longer. I’m really happy to be here and proud to be a part of Aston Villa. I wanted to stay longer and the club wanted me to sign the new deal so it has worked out well. I’m satisfied and hopefully the club is satisfied. I love the club, I love the fans, the team is a great group of players and of course the manager is a great, great manager. So the future looks bright and I just want to be a part of it. I think we can just do better and better than the club has done in a long time. We have signed some good players lately and our goal is to do even better than last year. So I’m just looking forward to the season.’

The Times have linked Aston Villa to Reading striker Kevin Doyle. They claim we’ll pay £7million but that Reading want £8m.

Apparently Manchester City are looking to increase their bid for Blackburn striker Santa Cruz who was linked to Villa last week. The Mirror claim Spurs are also interested and would have the money because sulky Dimitar Berbatov is on the verge of moaning his way to a move to Manchester United. Don’t know why but the word mercenary is on the tip of my tongue! (Oh, and the word hypocrite as I’d love to see us sign Santa Cruz!)

Alex McLeish has stated that Martin O’Neill has struck gold with his capture of Carlos Cuellar. McLeish, former Rangers manager still keeps one eye on the Gers apparently and was very impressed with Cuellar’s debut season in the Scottish Premier League. Speaking on our official site, he said: ‘He’s a good player. It will be interesting to see him at another level. It’s definitely a huge step up, the Premiership. But he played extremely well for Rangers. He was a stalwart defender, a no-nonsense defender, no frills, he just did his job. ‘He sniffed out danger when Rangers were under pressure in that great UEFA Cup run last season. I think you can only go on what you’ve seen so far, but certainly the Premier League will be a real test for Carlos. But I think Martin O’Neill, who is quite a shrewdie in the transfer market, knows what he’s doing.’ Full article by Vital Villan: Blues Boss Admits Cuellar Is Gold

Chelsea will apparently bid £23m bid for Robinho. Why does that matter? Well, it might free up Joe Cole and we’ve been linked with him. See, I’m not just a pig ugly face!? :o)

Following the 4-1 Villa win tonight against FH Hafnarfjordur, a happy Martin O’Neill told the official site: ‘That’s a very satisfactory outcome for us. I was concerned about the game beforehand, much as I was against Odense. But we’re fitter now and you could see that. We got the early goal, Gareth Barry was an absolute delight and we played particularly well going forwards. We had a few problems defensively but overall I was really satisfied. Obviously we’re in a very strong position now and we’ll hope to see the tie through.’ Full article: Post Match Reactions On The Result & Barry
