Martin O’Neill has talked to the official site about the fixtures and is happy that we kick off our campaign against Wigan at home. MON said: ‘I am always delighted to be at home – regardless of who it is. But it will be interesting because it’s Wigan and they have a new manager who has been very impressive at Swansea. I think he will probably want to make a few changes in personnel so there’s a chance we’ll be playing a very different side on that opening day.’

MON also says of the fixtures: ‘The second fixture at West Ham will not happen as we’re involved in the Europa League.’ So there you go, second game of the season and the first change to fixtures!

Martin O’Neill has justified the record fee of £12million being paid for former Newcastle winger James Milner. The Villa boss said: ‘James came in here for a big fee but he was not affected – not at all. He settled in very quickly and I am sure James would be the first one to say ‘you paid it, not me’. But to me anyway he justified the fee’ He also says that some players do ‘crumble’ when huge fees have been paid but adds that James was ‘first class.’ Not sure it needs justifying really, I think he’s a great signing!?
