Wilfred Bouma, who last night saw Holland go out of the Euro’s in a lacklustre game said he is now looking to help Villa push on next season: ‘In my time here we have gone from 16th to 11th to sixth, which is a massive improvement. My performances have gone the same way as well and hopefully I can continue that after the summer.’

Paul Merson will be the star attraction at Villa Park as he returns to his former home this week for a special question and answer session. It will be an unmissable night of entertainment as the midfield maestro looks back at his glorious career in claret and blue. You will also be able to ask the former England man your own question. John Carew told the official site that Villa want to carry on entertaining next season! ‘We are pleased to have got sixth place – we thought we might have got fifth place but sixth it is and if you had offered us that at the start of the season, we would have been very happy. We will have a well earned break now and then we will be back in July and ready for Europe. We will relax our heads a bit and then be back and raring to go.’ He also says the season was great for him and made him even more sure that he had made exactly the right move coming to Villa.
