Martin O’Neill says the signing of Stephen Warnock would have come a year earlier if he had had his choice. ‘I actually enquired about Stephen over a year ago. He wasn’t available back then. I like his versatility – he has played midfield, left-back and although it’s not his favoured position he has played at times in an attacking left-sided role. Overall, it’s his versatility, his attitude and his enthusiasm and determination that I really like. I think he will bring all those things to our team.’

MON says Villa have to use Everton as a beacon of hope, they went out of the UEFA early last season and bounced back to beat us to 5th: ‘We are out now and we will have to focus again on the Barclays Premier League. This time last season, Everton went out to Standard Liege and fought back magnificently to have a season to remember. They ended up finishing fifth and made it to the FA Cup final. We should take some consolation and heart from that. This team is prepared to go and do battle again.’
