Ashley Young says that Gabby Agbonlahor’s start to the season means he must be in contention for the England squad.

Ash, who has yet to really take off form wise this season told the Express & Star:

‘Gabby has been brilliant for us from the start of the season.’

Adding on the England set up: ‘He’s not been in the squad the last couple of games and he finds himself in a situation like I was at one stage last season. You have to get your head down and do well for the club. As long as he is doing that for the club you will always get that recognition with England and, if he keeps going the way he is, I don’t think he can be left out of the squad.’

Suppose the one problem for Gabby is the sparking form of Spurs striker Jermain Defoe who is starting to look the business for England, however Gabby has youth on his side as well as the fact he is now bulking up and maturing as a main line striker.

This really does need to be a great season for Gabby if he truly is looking to push on and be a serious contender for England at the World Cup next year. To be fair, he has a good chance to push in as a squad member if he keeps his early form up (3 PL goals and 1 in the league cup) although as he is only just 23 this month, he has time on his hands and will probably be a more serious condender come the world cup after next, making him a similar age to Defoe now and hopefully at his very peak.

You tend to forget the lad is so young as he appears to have been around for so long now, his name first came to prominance in the reserves where he was always scoring 2 or 3 goals and has made a steady introduction to the main team with a consistent contribution goals wise (PL 2006-2007 9 goals, PL 2007-2008 11 goals and PL 2008-2009 12 goals)

Basically, the world is at his feet….!
