The Writing Was On The Wall – No Return Likely.

The Birmingham Mail carry quotes from central defender Tommy Elphick.

“The manager gave his blessing for me to go out on loan without many centre-halves in the building so that says all you need to know.

“The last two league games I played for Steve, we beat Bristol City 5-1 and he took me out, then we beat Hull 3-1, I scored and he took me out again. The writing was on the wall after that.”

The whole situation is ludicrous to me. Playing an ageing midfielder, Mile Jedinak, in such a specialist position and having our begging bowls out for old and out of contract defenders instead of using what we have. Most players who are out of contract, are out of contract for a reason!

IF we had got in a decent central defender, fine, Tommy needs to be playing at this stage of his career. But we haven’t and we now look – I think (agree?) – rank amateur.

He wasn’t a world beater, but he wasn’t as bad as some fans make out. When he covered for John Terry last season, he was fine.

Remember the good times when he signed for us from AFC Bournemouth? They considered him a bit of a legend there. He even cut his honeymoon short to sign for us.

I’m frankly growing weary of us playing players out of position and wasting money and disposing of players who could do a job. As said, I’m not claiming he was a world beater, he clearly wasn’t, but now we have no cover unless Steve does decide to do the unimaginable and play people in their rightful places, then maybe Axel could cover.
