With reports linking Aston Villa with a move for Southampton left-back Matt Targett well known – I’ve covered it previously myself – the fact we are now into the final few days of the transfer window, there’s a growing clamour for us to get a deal over the line for the 22-year-old.

Having reportedly missed out on Tammy Abraham who has decided to remain with Chelsea whilst fans still want an alternative striker in, given recent loan deals by the club, plenty would be happy if Targett was the final capture as that would provide us better balance and better competition in the backline as we seek further improvement.

Targett’s attacking skills down the left-hand side would also be an asset when it came to our offensive options.

Whether we can get the deal done by the time the loan window slams shut on Friday at 5pm remains to be seen, but I live in hope anyway.

  • Targett would be a good pick up for us, but I’m still more concerned by the CB position than LB. As much as I would love us to get Cahill on loan for the season I just don’t see any truth in it – there don’t appear to be any positive vibes coming out of Chelsea about that one either, just chatter of him staying to fight for his place. My big worry with Abraham coming in now would be that he doesn’t look keen on the move himself, so you would have to question how much desire he will have on a Saturday afternoon when some big unit is trying to kick lumps out of him.

  • Agree with you Gary but we do need a LB. Problem is ( if I understand correctly ) we can only include 5 on loan players in the match squad. So, as it stands, that leaves only one place. Maybe SB will prefer bringing in another RB – just to make sure we have enough cover !!

    • CB would be my priority over all of them, a LB would be nice but I think Hutton and Bree have shown they are more than capable of playing there – in fact Hutton probably had his best games at LB last season. If Chester gets injured I think we will be in real trouble. Only other option would be signing a free agent like Huth but that all went very quiet
