The Mirror today claim that Aston Villa have approached Spurs to find out the availability of former Blackburn Rovers and Arsenal midfielder David Bentley. They go on to say a swap deal involving Gareth Barry might be possible. Hogwash I’d say…!

Sheffield United’s Kyle Naughton is also mentioned again in an otherwise quiet gossip day.

The only other bit I can find is Curtis Davies telling The Birmingham Mail that he expects an influx of players to Villa Park this summer.

The Villa defender says he expects lots of players coming inward but doesn’t know about the outward bound players implying we can’t afford to lose any because we have one of the smallest squads in the league.

‘I am sure the gaffer wants to build the squad rather than be breaking it apart. It will be an interesting summer. Last summer I think we signed something like six players so I can imagine something along similar lines. If people see the progression we have made as a team, and we get the right names here, they could help push us into the top four.’

Some are implying after Randy Lerner took the time to talk to the press that the Villa supremo won’t be spending as much money as last season. I think you can take quotes are read into them what you want, personally I don’t think quotes like being willing to let Gareth Barry run down his contract and leave on a free instead of grabbing £10million this summer OR the quotes telling clubs to forget bidding for Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Young sound like they are coming from a Chairman not willing to put the money into the club?

He says he knows like all clubs that money will need to be made available for the summer and says he is also conscious ‘of managing the players leaving and trying to generate funds from that. It is a balancing act but, yes, there will be funds. Will the credit crunch impact on funds available this summer? I don’t really view the credit crunch as a big issue in terms of the funding for the summer. But, if anything, what has gone on in the economy makes you very conscious of building a sustainable business because, in the end, that is what you are responsible for doing.’

He does also warn, ‘To the extent that you are deficit spending, maybe you should think very hard about how you are ultimately going to pay it off and the consequences of not being able to pay it off.’

So he isn’t prepared to say how much they are going to spend. Seems sensible to me? And he isn’t willing to pile debt onto Villa, again that sounds sensible? However he doesn’t say that he won’t be spending the tv money and placement prize OR some of his own money. So people can put 2+2 and come up with whatever they want, as far as I can see, Randy hasn’t let any of us down yet and I can’t see he wants to start now?

  • Barry for Bentley might be worth considering if Spurs threw in Modric as well. However, I would think that at this point in his career Barry would only move to a team in the Champions League- why swap the potential of success at Villa for the guaranty of mediocrity at Spurs?

  • mediocrity at spurs?…..if anyone wanted to watch mediocre football all they had to do was watch villa the last couple of months!

  • i cant see Barry going unless a team in the CL put a bid in. It wont be chelsea or Man Utd. That leaves Liverpool and Arsenal, I dont think he will be going to Liverpool unless they sell Alonso who had a great season. And im not sure Arsenal are that interested so he may end up staying another year. We wouldn’t swap him for Bently, Bently had a crap season and play in a different position would make no sense at all.

  • Why In gods name would any club be interested in rat faced bently? He deserves spurs, they deserve each other! If ANY of the big four come in for gabby, young or barry, you’ll lose them.

  • Hi Trennon. And that insight is based on what? I thought Barry played last season at Villa Park after Liverpoo had come in for him.

  • Trennon – are you on another planet?! Did u not see the biggest transfer Saga last summer and at Christmas where Martin Oneill and Villa ignored bids from Liverpool!”

  • gabby and young trennon had a good start to the season but come the end they was just as bad as your home and way from…the bigest mistake you made was getting heskey that put gabby off his game .but it just goes to show that we all watch football with blue and white and claret and blue specs on..

  • Gabby has had a terrible dip of form in the last third of the season, but to blame anyone but Gabby is crazy. Bentley? I think MON is interested as we tried to sign him from Blackburn. But Barry to Spurs..? That has to be one of the worst rumors about at the minute. Barry has stated his ambition at playing at the highest club level. i.e. CL. Are Spurs even in Europe next season?

  • If you believe what you read in the mirror you will think Labour are good for the country…LOL

  • no chance tottenham would even get near barry but we all know that anyway would welcome bently to villa hoped we would get him last year but as it turns out this will be cheaper and he will have a point to prove im not so sure barry will go now either knowing that his england place is obviously not certain if he moves. mixed messages from the media on what randy lerner has said about funds myself i think as usual the media have read far to much into a few sentances from the guy and are jus calling it how they want the investment will be there and i look forward to seeing a bunch of very talented new faces at villa park for the coming season starting probaly with sturridge and owen
