Tonge In Cheek?

Reports in The Sun this week suggested that David O’Leary might make an attempt to bring Sheffield United midfielder Michael Tonge to Villa.

The report suggests the Blades player might be available at a knockdown price as he has fallen down the pecking order at Bramall Lane.

You have to question the authenticity of the report mind you, why would we be looking at a player who can’t hold down a regular place in a Championship team (albeit a Championship team who are flying high!) ? The player, joined United in August 2000 and a few years ago was being raved about. He has made eight appearances for the Sheffield outfit this season.

With Doug saying we will only be able to bring in loan signings, it looks like this link, along with the 100 or so other rumours, will turn out to be wide of the mark, especially when you consider how many midfielders we currently have and whether Tonge would be seen as an improvement on any of them, including Jumper Jumper who can’t get a place in the side and Berson who is out on loan.
