The future of diminutive (well that’s how I remember him) midfielder Carles Gil may not be as unknown as previously thought.

The 25-year-old midfielder joined Aston Villa for a reported £3.2million back in January of 2015 but his time with us wasn’t the greatest of successes. He made 25 starting appearances with a further nine showings from the bench and in that time contributed three goals.

For many, he looked your normal tricky Spanish sort but struggled with the physical nature of the English game. With that said though, he had his fans and they would argue he wasn’t given long enough to make the adjustment.

Whatever line you may hold true, Gil headed back to Spain for a spell at Deportivo on a two-year loan spell as we panic cut cloth and tried to deal with finances. An injury-ravaged spell at the club has seen him make only 24 starts, with eleven more from the bench and although an obligation led buy-clause had been confirmed by Dr Tony Xia, speculation had it that with their relegation that was now off the table.

Not so, according to Sporting Director Carmelo del Pozo. He is quoted by Marca as stating the buy-clause remains an obligation and it will be enacted.

Then they find out if Gil wants to remain part of their lives in the second division.

“The obligatory purchase of Carles Gil will be effective, after, we will see if he wants to play in Segunda and if he is convinced of playing in Segunda.”

Some were already looking forward to Gil getting a second chance at B6 but it doesn’t look like that will happen. It is, however, a more instant financial payback for the club if he agrees to terms with them and that could bring its own benefit.
