Trying To Figure It Out? Good Luck.

A football season is a million miles on a crooked road. From August in one year, to May in the next, it twists and turns like a dreadlock.

Everything that you think you know, you don’t.

The gloom and doom of the Randy Lerner era, particular Randy’s swansong season 2015-16, has lifted……for now.

September awaits. Maybe lift-off. Maybe…, well, let’s not go there.

Football defies prediction and knee-jerk reaction.

Unless your team is really good (Wenger’s unbeaten Arsenal) or really bad (Aston Villa 2015-16), there simply is no projecting.

That’s why screaming for a manager to be fired in September or October, is merely uneducated spleen-cleaning.

That’s why protesting and demanding the current ownership sells the team usually has all the intelligence of a shell washed up on a beach.

You need to go to other sports for snap judgments. Football doesn’t work that way. Or maybe it does? Maybe that’s the problem. I’ve given up trying to figure ‘the beautiful game’ out.

But we’ve been lucky. We’ve struck gold. At least that’s how it seems at this moment in time. We’re happy, we’re contented, we’re excited. And to feel that way after one win in six, we must be on the right track. We’re back in business. Right?

The only question now I suppose is which Villa are we going to see this season? The Villa who in 2015-16 made you look away and weep long before half time, or the Villa that has you thinking, Hey, 2016-17 might just be o.k.

Don’t even try to answer. Football in general, and Aston Villa in particular, isn’t for figuring out.

We have loudly applauded the club’s performance throughout the summer. Clearing the deadwood, or most of it, and the rebuilding, the reshaping.

Our immediate future? A serious push for promotion, mid-table mediocrity, or even, heaven forbid, a battle at the bottom?

I have no idea.

If you think you do, you don’t know football.

In football, you don’t know nothing.
