Two Stars In The Making As A Rampant Villa Earn Their Spurs – Match Stats

Another stupid 6pm kick off, saw Aston Villa travel up to White Hart Lane to face managerless Tottenham Hotspur earlier this evening.

Our form in 2021 has been inconsistent to say the last, but Spurs haven’t fared much better, although they have typically got their act together in recent weeks, but our silver lining was we should expect to see Jack Grealish for a bit longer today as he continues to build his own sharpness back up after his lengthy injury. We all hoped Tyrone Mings would return as well, but Matty Cash and Morgan Sanson have been ruled out for the final two matches of the 2020/21 campaign.

It was a lively opening 45 minutes, and by rights, we should’ve been more clear than the 2-1 lead we went into the half time break with following a spectacular Reguilon own goal and another Ollie Watkins effort after they took an eighth minute lead.

The less said about Watkins being taken out in the box is probably for the better after the ridiculous double yellow he saw the other week.

But Spurs started brightly in the second period and we had Emi Martinez to thank again for keeping them out, but plenty were left wondering why Anwar El Ghazi wasn’t give a spot kick at their end as he jinked through.

We did, however, continue to grow back into the half and we had a handful of chances to extend our lead, but at least our play was far better once again. Quite why Bertie wanted to walk the ball in as opposed to actually shooting left everyone confused, and then Ollie tried similar, but his attempt was saved by a late offside.

It really should’ve been 3-1 at this stage, so I doubt I was alone in thinking our faffing about would come back to bite us. And then a truly woeful Spurs subbed on Gareth Bale.

Sadly, shortly after we took Jack off with him getting a very good run out, so what did fate have in store?

Well, Ollie had another late chance to tie things up but it again went begging and even though it was largely now all Spurs, we were organised and defending for our lives at the back.

Fans had long wanted it, and with a couple remaining, an impressive Nakamba was given a rest and it was Chucky Time as Carney came on for his debut.

The next best chance fell to Bertie, who once again wanted to showboat instead of hitting it, so naturally, it came to nothing.

We did then see a second debut in the shape of Jaden Philogene-Bidace and shortly after Chuky hit the woodwork. They may have only been cameo appearances, but neither looked out of place and with both on the pitch, we actually edged the game back in our favour.

It was a horrible final 20 minutes though, but we saw it out and took a very well deserved victory.

Plenty of positives again.
