Kevin MacDonald’s Under 23 side may have narrowly and disappointingly missed out on automatic promotion and the Premier League 2 Division 2 title this season, but tonight’s trip to Wales brought back silverware.

With eyes turned from Play-Off hopes, Aston Villa concentrated all efforts on Premier League Cup success and our youngsters lifted the trophy a short time ago this evening having taken victory over Swansea City in the final at the Liberty Stadium.

Our Division 1 opponents certainly didn’t embarrass themselves on the night and it was a cracking game to watch in terms of the way it ebbed and flowed, with each side having opportunities to have lifted the Cup in normal time. You could see why they were the reigning holders having won it last year.

Credit also goes to the Swans for keeping the feed going for the presentation and celebrations as few of us expected that.

With the game ending scoreless at full time, extra time also ended with both sides failing to find the net so it was onto the lottery that is penalties.

Jordan Lyden was first up to give us the advantage and he was joined on the scoresheet by Kelsey Mooney, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, and Jack Clarke.

Matija Sarkic saved two of their efforts from 12 yards so deserves special mention.
