Martin O’Neill is looking for hungry players at Aston Villa and intends to speak to them to see who has the ambition to restore Aston Villa’s reputation following last seasons poor displays.

O’Neill said: ‘I need to speak to all the disenchanted players. I wouldn’t want people like Angel, Baros, Hendrie or Barry walking out the door without having spoken to me. I’m assuming Milan will not be fit enough to travel with the international team next week, so I will talk to him then. I hope the players retain some enthusiasm for playing for the club, even those who may be disenchanted.’

He also says that although he will try to convince them to stay, if they aren’t happy he won’t look to keep them.

‘I will meet them individually. That’s the best way. They may have a personal gripe or moan and I might be able to sort it out. Sometimes if people are absolutely adamant that they no longer want to be part of it, persuading people might be a bit more difficult, so there’s no point in me saying that everybody is going to be here.’

  • Baros is the only one I can think of that might want to go still as he is the only one that won’t be aware of O’Neill’s reputation (maybe Berson or DJ*2 too (gerrit? tu-tu) but I thinkk that they will just be glad to get a chance again) and Baros can’t ge

  • its not o’neil that will scare them off, some of them have survived various managers only to see the clubs steady demise towards the relegation scrap under doug ellis. These players may, like us, not be fooled by the manager merry go round and dougs crazy

  • O’Neills ultimatum and outlook on this is fine by me. If they dont want to be part of it, they are better off out of here, and we are better off without them. Its going to be a difficult enough campaign as it is, without having dissenters in the ranks.

  • The more I read about Gareth Barry’s situation, the move I think he could be sold, maybe not now but in the January transfer window. He doesn’t seem happy to stay.

  • I hope Baros and Angel stay, we need international level players like them to help us move forward. A new era means old negative feelings should stay in the past, give it a chance and they will see. And I hope we get Hargreaves.
