“Unthinkable” – Villa Star Knows We’re On The Right Path After Weekend Disappointment

|

Midfielder John McGinn needs little introduction at Aston Villa following the performances we’ve seen from the former Hibernian player, and with plenty of positives to take from our clash against Liverpool last weekend, if anyone wondered about the spirit of the group after the late and hugely frustrating defeat, his words this week should certainly provide comfort.

Having taken the Champions of Europe almost right until the end of the game until their late sucker punch, we certainly deserved a point on the day and speaking to the Birmingham Mail the other day as he reflected on our performance at Villa Park, the 25-year-old Scottish international definitely didn’t sound too downbeat given the final result.

“A performance like this would have been unthinkable a few months ago. But we’ve got as group of players here that want to keep learning and, at Villa Park, anything is possible. The atmosphere was unreal and we kept pushing and pushing. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day. Maybe the next time they come calling, we’ll be a bit closer. There is so much interest in Villa at the minute, the club is only going one way. If we play like that for the rest of the season, we’ll be fine.”

Understandably he spoke about being ‘gutted’ about the defeat, but you have to take the positives.

McGinn is also definitely right to point out the fact we are still on a learning curve, and we continue to have players settling into life at the club, let alone just the top flight but given our battle this year isn’t against the likes of the Scousers, perform like we did against three quarters of the division, cut out the silly errors, and we’ll get more than enough points.

This year continues to be about only one thing – survival – anything else is a bonus.
