I have been attending Villa matches for over 35 years and have seen many ups and downs. I think sometimes Villa fans can be impatient and unrealistic in terms of their aspirations and demands and I believe it is time someone took the time to put a balanced view across.

Less than 18 months ago this club was at its lowest ebb since the days of Turner and McNeil. I am convinced without the takeover we would have been relegated and now languishing in the Championship. Just take time to reflect and remember those dark days – the proposed boycott of VP, the refusal to compete in the transfer market, an ailing and out of touch dictator.

We now have a situation where we have a focused management team, a generous owner, a packed VP and a decent team. It is not a championship winning team but it is a reasonably competitive one.

If anyone expected us to be challenging for the league this season then they should be certified. Building a league championship team takes time – Ferguson spent record sums and still took over half a decade, and he actually took over a good side packed with internationals!

Yes, it was frustrating in the summer but would it have been right to buy just for the sake of it? Harewood appears to be the one player that fits this criteria and none of us are happy. Surely it is better to wait for the right target and get the player the manager wants and the fans will be happy with.

I do not think MON has done a bad job. He has brought belief and stability to a club that had become a laughing stock and was the scene of player power and rebellion. He has done this in a remarkably short space of time – just over one season.

Please be patient and give the boss time. I remember fans getting on Ron Saunders back (and even calling for his head) after the sale of Gidman, Gray, Nichol and Deehan. Fans were frustrated at the lack of stars and purchases, midfielders being played at right back (Swain) and kids commanding positions in midfield and up front (Cowans and Shaw). However the manager had a plan, actually knew what he was doing and ended up building a team that conquered Europe. It didn’t happen overnight and, at times, it didn’t seem to make any sense but the manager was left to it and given time.

I implore Villa fans to be patient and let MON build his team. He should not be judged for at least two more seasons. Managers who are believed in and left in charge tend to flourish; teams who chop and change their boss tend to disintegrate.

Keep the faith and the good times will truly start a rolling!!
