Martin O’Neill says that he will focus on getting Stiliyan Petrov signed to a longer deal now the transfer window is over.

Funny old game really, if he’d said he wanted to secure Petrov on a longer deal last year most would have thought him mad but now the Bulgarian international is playing out of his skin and is a key part of our team.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who will be missing tonight against Doncaster as he serves his one match ban for 5 yellow cards but will return for the weekend’s game against Blackburn, has just 18 months left on his current deal and is said to be happy to commit long term.

The Villa boss told the Official Site:

‘Now that the transfer window is closed, to me, I would say that sorting out Stiliyan Petrov’s future will be top priority. I think he has done brilliantly. I don’t know how things would go but I would hope he would want to stay at Aston Villa although I would not want to pre-empt things. It will be a top priority to get that sorted out and we will be looking to plan talks.’
