They say it runs in the family and it appears to in the world of Gardner’s.

Aston Villa have confirmed speculation linking Gary Gardner with a move to St Andrews, and he heads across the city on a loan spell that will last for the entire 2018/19 campaign.

The 26-year-old spent last season out on loan at Barnsley, getting 30 games under his belt, returning two goals and he heads away from Villa Park once more in search of greater game time.

He arrived at the Trillion Trophy (cough) Stadium earlier today alongside brother Craig who was nice enough to give him a lift, and he does, of course, follow his brother to the club after he made the switch all those years ago.

It’s fair to say that the reaction to this news on social media has been less than polite but these days that’s only to be expected and I’m not going to repeat it here. You would think this is a curtain call for Gardner’s time at B6 though as it’s hard to imagine him returning now.

Will forever be a ‘what if’ had those two serious knee injuries not held him back when he was really motoring with potential all those years ago.

I for one, wish him well. I do reserve the right to change that sentiment if he ever scores against us in the future though.
