Danish international Martin Laursen says he knows he’ll have a fight on his hands to re-claim his place when he returns once again from injury.

The defender, who is currently out with ligament damage having returned from a season long absence due to a career threatening knee injury, said:

‘It’s not going to be easy to get a regular place when I’m fit again. Olof and Liam have looked good all season and Gary Cahill is also back now. He was really good when he broke into the side last season, so it’s fair to say the manager has a few positive problems at the back.’

Adding, on the official site: ‘When things are going in the right direction, why change the team? My main priority is to get again as soon as possible and do my best whenever I’m in the team. Then, hopefully I will play more games. It’s what you do on the pitch that matters. It’s worth nothing to say I was bought from AC Milan for a lot of money if I don’t perform well.’

Competition for places at Villa? Whatever next!?!

  • honest bunch of lads to boot, should be aiming for the same as Charlton he said, well we would be if he was still here.

  • Would it be worth changing the formation to accomodate our best players? We have 4 brilliant centre backs and ZERO good full backs. How about a change to 3-5-2?

  • Funny how Villa have the smallest squad in the league but we have used more players this year than any other team in the Prem.

  • Well said hoss, it reiterates a point I made a few days ago. I also think that we are not necessarily lacking in the full back department. Hughes, Delaney (when fit), Samuel and Bouma may not be world beaters but they are at least the equivalent of 75% of other full backs in the Premier League. It is only the last couple of games (without Sorensen) that we have leaked a few goals. Before that we were very strong defensively. It is also important to remember that you do not have to have the best individuals, you have to have the best team. You only have to remember , Adams, Bould, Sphincterburn and Dixon to see how four average players made a brilliant unit. As for calling for 3 – 5 – 2. I have been at games where Villa fans have been demanding 4 4 2. It is about adapting and flexibility, not simply saying that we must rigidly play a certain way. I also think we can safely leave formations in M’ONs hands, unless you have abilities and a track record we are unaware of deano? Hughes, Mellberg, Ridge and Bouma/Barry/Samuel (???) works and if it ‘ain’t broke don’t fix it. Lets concentrate on getting a goalscorer.

  • Did I say I had better abilities than MON? No. But is this a place to discuss all things Villa such as potential transfer targets, formations, players out, etc? Yes.

  • What a plus a fully fit Martin Laursen would be. On top of his game, he would surely be a certain starter?

  • Martin Laursen great defender to watch hope he is back soon. on another matter i think Barry should be left back he plays really well there getting forward more than Bouma and defending better than Samuel.

  • I think that Barry would be wasted at left back, a player of his ability shouldn’t be shackled with too much defensive responsibility. That said its all about opinions as DeanoVilla points out.

  • Laursen has been missed, and once fit again, I can’t see a player of his quality spending long on the bench.
