Sweden international defender Olof Mellberg could well be on the verge of a new deal at Villa after telling the official site:

‘It’s in the hands of my agent and the club. With the season just started, everyone just wants to focus on that. I see the club really moving in the right direction and I want to be part of it. When you’ve been at the club for a long time, it’s nice to see some changes and that’s happened – especially last season with the new owner and the new manager.’

The bearded one also says that the changes have been positive with a new training ground adding ‘it feels good, especially for us players who have been with the club for some time. It’s always nice to see positive changes. It’s almost like being at a new club and with the change in players.’

He also backs fellow defensive rock Martin Laursen to get over the own goal he scored against Liverpool.

He said: ‘The partnership with Martin Laursen has been going really well, but the own goal was so unfortunate. We have an almost telepathic understanding – it feels really good playing together. We enjoyed playing together last season when we played quite a few games and that carried on in pre-season. We know each other’s game inside out and we know each other well off the field as well, which helps. We’re very good friends off the pitch and we get along really well. It feels right and we seem to suit each other well. He wants to have a season where he plays every week and that’s what he’s looking at.’

Meanwhile some reports are suggesting that Villa target Curtis Davies is set to join Tottenham Hotspurs. Time will tell, but it certainly looks like the Baggies defender is on the move.
