Villa Didn’t Do A Fulham – Stick That Somewhere Lazy Pundits – Match Stats

|

With Aston Villa blowing so many golden opportunities to ensure our Premier League survival in the 2019/20 campaign, results kept going our way with an utterly unexpected victory over Arsenal, we took survival to the final day and faced off against West Ham United.

All we had to do if I had the permutations right, was match or better Watford’s final result, but Bournemouth could’ve been an unexpected bogey.

It was a bright start, but then the hosts gained control (without really threatening) and we began sitting way too far back, but Jack really should’ve had us in the lead at the half came to an end.

Watford’s result was going for us, but Bournemouth were making life unnecessarily difficult. Second half was in our hands though, win and nothing else mattered.

We contained the well, it looked likely they wouldn’t even have a shot on target, but we were equally inept up front and again our better chances were wasted – until Jack took his chance with six minutes remaining.

Great celebrations and then West Ham went straight down the other end and with an unlucky deflection, they were instantly back on level terms.

We never do things the easy way do we – but we are Premier League and I think we all deserve the rest of the weekend off to recover.

We didn’t do a Fulham, we now have a core in place with 12 months experience under their belts – dare we dream of next season or should we sober up first?

Manchester United beat us to the inaugural Prem title in 1992/93, but what was the score when we travelled to Old Trafford?

thought we were relegated pre arsenal game. Then the great escape. Year to remember for sure. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

  • Virginia Villan says:

Phew! What a roller coaster! Thanks Mike for all your great reporting, and a good week ahead to the worldwide Villa faithful. We should all have a bounce or two back in our step!

    • Mike Field says:

‘Great reporting’ clearly you’re already drinking Virginia! Cheers dude and thanks for reading and that goes to the lurkers as well. You weren’t the only one Ali!

  • Andy5759 says:

Well said Ali, my Boomer mates have been texting me all day!

  • Andy5759 says:

    Sorry, Gooner mates.

    • Mike Field says:

I was wondering for a minute but thought it was a youthful insult as my kids keep calling me that!

  • Tony J says:

The season’s finale had been so tight, walnuts were cracking.

In the end we got away with fewer points than had seemed necessary. Great relief on the final whistle.

There will be some key decisions to make with the squad, particularly in the attacking positions. It will be interesting if to see who departs. Clearly, the first team options are too thin at present, but I would be surprised if more than 3 or 4 come in from outside. Had we taken the drop, well that could have been quite different.

Anyhow, we survived and I hope Smith has learnt at lot along the way. UTV!

    • Mike Field says:

4-5 quality instant starters – let those still needing to show they can adapt and adjust prove that from the bench. That way we’ll move forward and retain some small momentum.

      • Ali Arab says:

        agreed. 4 or 5 around 150mil.
But big question is who will be running the show.
Ffp load of bull as ypu seem with man City.
        Owners it down to you.

        • Mike Field says:

Yup, reinvest now at last summers level but on key improvements. We need to avoid a rebuild again, given everyone else longer to settle and adjust and show their worth before we cast them aside – but they move from starters to bench. But no, the Man City FFP decision is not that clear cut mate, we have to abide with the Covid changes that could still work in our favour.

          • Ali Arab says:

Man City have set prescedent and compleltly disected ffp.
Paves the way for clubs to spend and only worry about fines.
            OWNERS HAVE NO EXCISE.

  • Freddy says:

Villa didn’t do a Fulham, they spent £50million MORE than Fulham did, and were incredible lucky not to drop down.
