Villa Hammer The Saints For Gerrard’s Biggest Win So Far – Match Stats

Having picked up a much needed win in our last game against Brighton and Hove Albion, Aston Villa gaffer Steven Gerrard went into today’s clash with Southampton at Villa Park desperately hoping to make it back to back victories and we’d need to perform as we knew what Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side would be like.

And we were bright and lively from the off, and after a nice passage of play, we gave ourselves the advantage in the ninth minute as Ollie Watkins battled through after a nice ball from Danny Ings to put it in the back of the net.

Around the half hour mark it was a bit more of a level game and Southampton had posed some threat, but we really should’ve doubled our advantage as Ollie had a great chance to make it a brace but saw his effort well saved.

As the half drew to a close Matty Cash played a major part in creating what became a chance for him, but his effort flashed past the post much to the annoyance of every in B6. But our second came soon after as Philippe Coutinho set up Douglas Luiz with a minute left on the clock. Coutinho could’ve been on a hattrick in fairness.

Was that our good half? Who knows, but some of the individual improvement on a performance front had been stark.

It was another bright start to the second half and as I went to finish off making a coffee, we scored a third and Coutinho finally had his goal. I’d barely sat back down again and Danny Ings had popped in a fourth.

This was turning into a much needed entertaining game.

Southampton had a couple of chances but didn’t really trouble Emi Martinez in goal, and we could’ve (should’ve) added more to our tally, but everyone would’ve taken 4-0 ahead of the game, so I’m going to enjoy my night.
