Martin O’Neill has explained why he has decided to stay at Villa despite intense press speculation linking him with the England job.

The Villa boss said, ‘This job is far from complete and may never be completed. I feel as if I’m just starting out in it and we’re getting things together. We’re getting a young side starting to gel and, more importantly than that, Villa supporters have come out in big numbers to support us.’ (4th best attendance in our history)

He doesn’t claim praise for the attendance but did add ‘All I am saying is I have got all those things to consider and I have considered them. I want to do this job and that really should end it. I am committed here to this job at Aston Villa and I love the job.’

‘This is where I want to do my job and I want to try and do something proper for Aston Villa.’

Right so categorically he isn’t interested in the poison challice of the England job.

Trouble is he then said, for a joke: ‘I think I’d be brilliant! My ego thinks I’d be brilliant. Actually the rest of me thinks I’d do it brilliantly! I didn’t do to well to be perfectly honest at the interview I had – so I don’t need to worry about polishing up interview skills.’

Which according to some of the press leaves the door slightly ajar. I think they are mad. If this man says he is or isn’t doing something, then he sticks to it.

FA, go for Harry Redknapp, he’ll sort the underforming England buggers out!
