Ever since NSWE arrived at Aston Villa there’s been very little to criticise given the way they have gone about their business, invested and built the club back up again but fans had long been crying out for a marquee signing to really nail our intentions to the post and earlier today, we got just that in the shape of Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho.

The 29-year-old Brazilian international has had good success in the game, although it’s not unfair to say his time at Barcelona has been a bit of a mixed bag. Still, his form for Liverpool convinced them to pay a reported £142million for his services and we’ve picked him up on a loan to buy deal for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign.

It’s been reported that the deal with Barcelona means the deal for Coutinho works out cheaper for us than the Ross Barkley loan, and we have the choice to make it permanent over the summer for a claimed £33million.

His lack of game time may mean we won’t see the best of him for a couple of weeks, but with other clubs interested in him, yet him choosing B6 as his destination, with the years left in him this doesn’t feel like a final payday deal that we’ve had to suffer previously.

If Steven Gerrard can get his former teammate back to his previous levels, this might be the deal we look back on in a few years where we did take that next step.
