According to the Mail On Sunday, Gareth Barry is set to move to Portsmouth this week.

The report says that Pompey manager Harry Redknapp expects to seal a £4.5million deal in the next few days for the left-sided midfielder.

Gareth Barry came through the youth system after we attracted him from Brighton, starting as a YTS trainee. He started in midfield but was soon utilised as a left sided defender and some say his best form came when he was on the left side of a back three. In recent seasons Barry has once again moved into midfield saying he didn’t like playing in defence. He made his first team debut at the age of 17 coming on as a sub against Sheffield Wednesday in 1998. He has made over 300 league and cup appearances for Villa scoring 26 goals along the way. He also has 27 England U21 caps and 8 full international caps.

You’ve got to doubt this report surely? With the arrival of Martin O’Neill and an expected takeover to happen in the next few weeks, why would he want to move to Portsmouth?

  • If this article is true and he wants a move to Portsmouth, let him go…We want and need players who want to play for Villa. Players who need to be persuaded to stay at our great club are not wanted in my thoughts. If the situation regarding the club bei

  • shame if this is true, I was hoping he would go to Spurs. I am a little suprised if it is for football reasons only, Portsmouth are throwing money around but I do see moving there as a gamble. Maybe sitting tight and seeing what O’Neil plans were would be

  • This just stinks of lazy journalism to me, an article being re-used from a couple of weeks back to fill column inches. Lets not get on Barrys back til there is something more definate.

  • WTF??? I thought MON held talks already with him and he fully committed his future to Villa? Well Portsmouth themselves are entering a new era, but i still dont see why Barry would want to move now, to any other team. If he does move, i want to see an imm

  • He’s having talks this week, and i doubt the times have the ability to see into the future and know what his response will be. The fact that its portsmouth is even harder to believe. smaller club, smaller ground but with a bit of money which we will soon

  • He’s certainly unhappy about a few things, included being quoted in the latter part of last week as having decided to commit his immediate future to the club. The 4.5m fee seems a bit on the low side to me.

  • ******* hell , how in gods name would moving to Portsmouth be a good career move ! If he does leave he deserves everything he gets !! Championship football !!!

  • His last really good season for us was under Graham Taylor and before that, he’d been left out by I’ve always been frustrated by his inconsistency – merely an ok midfielder whose best position was either left back in the left side of a back th

  • I don’t rate him but it will be nice to get a south coast lad in the team. Villa could do with the money. Everyone is a winner.

  • Barry is good but not great we dont need players who dont want to play for us, he is hardly a match winner, i woul’nt pay 4.50 for him!!!!!

  • I’m not sure about the story, we are currently investing a lot of time and about to spend a lot of money in a benfica midfielder called fernandes, Barry wouldnt want to sit on the bench here any more than he does at Villa. We seem to have been through the

  • FYI Barry does not just sit on the bench so I guess that sums up your football knowledge. I don’t expect you to know all about Villa players but if you don’t know why make a fool of yourself? I know little about Pompy but I do know that even with all t

  • Villain your own supporters on this and other websites say because of consistency he would be on the bench if you get Petrov, or any other decent midfielder, but at least your not bitter about things eh, secondly i’m not sure your “international status” i

  • russelm, I was refering to this closed season as far as throwing money arround is concerned, but unfortunately Pompey’s low status has meant that even with money they have found it difficult to attract top players. As far as Petrov is concerened I think

  • First as i said on the other heading i dont come on to other teams web sites and slag them off. I think i said quite clearly that we were likely to end this season mid atable and i think so will you. Your stadium is bigger, but your fan base isnt, Again s

  • lol, southend is too good for them!!!! As for how we achive a top 6 status, I’m looking 3-5 years ahead, not next season, a top half finnish is what I am expecting as Villa have some very good players who just did not perform for O’Leary. I want some in

  • I think Barry would be better off at Pompey. According to all the bookies, Pompey are rated alot higher than Villa for next season. We are on the up and our team is looking stronger every day. We have just signed sol campbell, david james, kanu, sulley mo

  • I agree that on paper your signings are good, problem is that they will all soon be drawing their pensions. Good luck with James on crosses by the way, we’ve had experience of that and it’s not a pretty sight. We call him Calamity James.

  • Signing David James does not make you bigger than us! Just thought i’d clear that one up. We had him once too you know..butterfingers.

  • Wo cares, rather see malbranq – he has vision and creativity. He’s proven in the EPL and Fulham want to sell. Would like to see Gravesen too but I can’t see that happening. Malbranq would supply Baros and Angel with the bullets man.

  • Another point pompey fans, barry would move to further his career both at club level and international. dont see that happening as both sol campbell and james have been axed by mclaren after signing for you. also having a bigger fans base than us? you rea

  • Truth be told both clubs have under achieved for years. with money to spend both clubs will hopefully be able to leave those days behind them. Over which club is going to be the more succesfull only time will tell, my money is on Pompey at the moment due
