There are going to be a lot of very difficult decisions to be made this summer with swingeing cuts to fall on the playing squad.

The biggest is going to be over Jack Grealish’s future and whether we cash in on our no.10 in order to balance the books. However, I noticed a report by Daily Mail columnist Laurie Whitwell discussing our other academy graduates.

The journalist believes Southampton could make bids of between £3-4million for Keinan Davis and Andre Green. What worries me is that with the cashflow crisis being so severe, the club could be tempted by any offers that come our way.

It would be extremely short-sighted, but the temptation could be there to sell these youngsters if the financial situation doesn’t improve.

Players like Davis and Green are the future of this club. The lifeblood that will allow us to get us back on track during a time of tremendous peril.

In Keinan’s case, he has already tasted a season of regular first team football after having played 33 games under Steve Bruce last campaign. He would likely be a central component as the club start to rebuild. His experience of the Championship should hold him in good stead for next season’s challenges.

For Green, there will be a steeper learning curve, but he showed early last season what he is capable of before sustaining that hamstring injury. At 19 years of age, he is someone who is also primed for the first team.

Without these two, we would likely have to rely on younger players who are not ready for senior football. There are numerous other senior players in the squad, on higher wages with less to offer that should be shipped out before these promising teenagers.

Despite the likely urgent need to generate funds from player sales, I am hoping that some common sense will prevail if we do receive bids for the duo. These talented youngsters are the key for us to have a bright future.
