Villa Outclassed At The Palace – Match Stats

After an incredibly poor showing against Bournemouth on the opening day of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, there some positives that Aston Villa fans could take from our victory over Everton and with today’s game seeing us travel down to Selhurst Park to face Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace side, everyone hoped that we’d now start walking the walk and actually picked up back to back victories.

And we did almost have the perfect start as five minutes in Leon Bailey set up Ollie Watkins to give us the lead. A lead that only lasted two minutes, before Wilfried Zaha got the first of his brace and having basically out fought us and out thought us, the hosts pushed on further in the second half, scoring twice to secure a 3-1 win.

There can’t even really be any Video Assistant Referee complaints here, as Palace rightly had a first half goal ruled out for offside before the penalty was awarded (another penalty shout earlier dismissed) – but plenty will be taking another look at Emi Buendia’s shout for a foul in the build up to the leveller.

Back to the drawing board, if we ever left it.
