The latest injury to strike is to our defender Aaron Hughes who has aggravated his hernia injury.

The problem has again been put down to the hardness of the pitch at Villa Park.

Our injury crisis, it seems, is mainly down to the state of our usually excellent pitch and plans are already in place to dig the current one up and replace it in the summer at a cost of around £700 000

Villa have had an amazing run of injuries to key players this season including Hughes, Lee Hendrie, Gavin McCann, Kevin Phillips, Milan Baros, Laursen, Mark Delaney, Gary Cahill, Jlloyd Samuel, De La Crus and Wilfred Bouma, who have all missed games through injury – though not all directly due to the pitch problems obviously!

O’Leary, quoted in the Mirror Online said about Hughes:

‘Aaron was very uncomfortable after our game against Wigan at the weekend and has suffered a reaction to his hernia problem.’

Delaney is due to step in for his first game of the season.

  • Graham Souness used this one a few days ago. Not the only thing these two managers have in common then at the moment?

  • How often did players in years gone by fall foul of injuries like this? Tackles were harder, pitches weren’t governed by science and the football’s themselves were harder.

  • I sometimes think if we did have 10 or 11 out we’d win more matches with how some of our first team stars perform.

  • wish we had the strength in depth at the time to cope with it! at the moment we have just 2 players out and 1 of them is our assistant manager. we do need another striker though as we struggled when 3 out of 4 were unavailable. And now i’ll go back to my

  • Our defenders especially seem to be cursed. Laursen is a long term injury, Delaney has suffered all season with injuries and is only now getting back into contention, even reserve defender Cahill is having to have an exploratory operation to sort out his
