With Aston Villa confirming the speculation linking us with a move for Southampton left back Matt Targett by announcing his capture on Monday morning, the 23-year-old was certainly saying all the right things on his arrival.

Smith Secures His Top Targett – Now For…

Having signed for a believed £14million rising to £17million all in, he has decent top flight experience for his age and the former England Under 21 international was well rated at Southampton.

Speaking to the Official Site after penning his new deal (I’m assuming four years) 23-year-old Targett clearly felt that head coach Dean Smith was trying to build ‘something special’ at the club and he relishing the opportunity to play his part in that.

“Dean, the gaffer, is building something special here. I have spoken to him and I’m really excited to join the club, work with him and help him in his plans to move this club as forward as it can go. The gaffer likes to play good football, exciting, attacking football and that’s a really good fit for me. It’s perfect for me. To play the style the gaffer wants to play, I’m excited about it. It’s exciting times here. It’s a massive club too. I am very impressed by the stature of the club. There’s a massive fanbase here and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of them. The training ground is amazing – great facilities and obviously Villa Park speaks for itself – a tremendous, big stadium.”

Given how highly rated he has been over the past few years and with plenty of development still to be made, hopefully he’ll hit the ground running with us and we’ll reap the potential plenty seem to think he has.

In the few times I’ve watched him play I’ve been pretty impressed and I’m not alone in that.
