Good news for Wales international and Aston Villa right back Mark Delaney.

Martin O’Neill has given the 30-year-old the summer to prove his fitness before deciding on what to do with him despite his contract coming to an end in June.

Delaney had surgery by the same surgeon that salvaged Martin Laursens career, Dr Richard Steadman, and it is hoped that has cured Delaney’s knee problems.

Martin O’Neill told the official site:

‘Mark’s contract ends in June but I will look at this and I think it is only right we should be looking after him until he is fit. If Mark’s current programme goes according to plan, he would be hoping to be joining in with us towards the end of July – and I am happy for that to be the case. Then we will be in a better position to assess what is happening with him, hopefully by the end of July to mid-August.’

He also adds that he feels it is Villa’s ‘duty’ to do the right thing by Mark and make sure his recovery is aided, even if a new contract isn’t offered.

Such a blow for the Welshman, when fit there aren’t many better right backs in the Premiership, would be superb to see him recover and play a part in the Villa’s future.

Wonder if a pay as you play deal could be sorted?!
