Villa romped to a 6-0 win over Swiss side FC Wil 1900 and Martin O’Neill was delighted with the pre-season start. Our goals came with a brace from Marlon Harewood + contributions from John Carew, Nathan Delfouneso, Shaun Maloney and Wayne Routledge.

The Villa boss told the official site:

‘It was very good, considering we’ve been back in training for just about a week. It was very encouraging and there were some very nice goals scored. You wouldn’t want to read too much into it; maybe the strength of the opposition wasn’t fantastic. But even so it was a nice venue and a nice way to start. It was nice to score a few goals but more importantly it was just good to get a feel of the pitch and a feel of the game to try and get back into a rhythm as quickly as possible because we’ve got the Intertoto game coming up.’

Adding, ‘In normal circumstances I wouldn’t be too bothered; we’d have a leisurely build-up to the season. But we have to get into competitive mode very early on this season. Whoever we face in the Intertoto, in terms of matches, will be much fitter than us, so we have to try and overcome that.’
