QPR are set to sign Jiangsu Suning centre-back Trent Sainsbury on a six-month loan deal, according to the Sun (via HITC).

The Australian international had been linked with a move to us in recent weeks, but with the club not even able to afford loan signings currently, it was never likely that the 26-year-old would be making the switch to Villa Park.

However, with Stoke looking to sign James Chester, and with John Terry and Chris Samba having already left the club, a move for the World Cup star on a temporary basis would have greatly strengthened the centre of defence.

Sainsbury’s international teammate Mile Jedinak, who can also play in defence, is also available for transfer due to the size of his salary. Without recruits, it could leave Tommy Elphick and Micah Richards as the club’s two lone senior centre-backs if sales of Chester and the Australian veteran do happen before the end of the transfer window.

The takeover by an Egyptian consortium NSWE could change things. The club have announced that there will be “significant investment” from the new investors, but we will have to wait and see what that means.
