Villa skipper Gareth Barry has some wise words following our victory over Chelski yesterday.

The influential midfielder declared: ‘This counts for nothing unless we build on it.’

Adding on the official site, ‘It’s been well documented that we’ve struggled against the top four teams, so it was nice to finally get three points against one of the big boys, especially Chelsea because they’re riding high at the top of the league. Chelsea are as good a team as anyone to beat. Taking it on into the next game is the hardest thing now. Chelsea will be forgotten now, it’s just another three points. We’ve got to think about a tough trip to Manchester City, who are flying as well. We’ve got a few days to think about this great result but then our minds will be on City.’

Shame the internationals have come to get in the way of the head of steam Villa were buidling. Barry also says that Europe has to be the target and the win has given them ‘belief’.

Adding the importance of keeping Martin Laursen fit and ‘The young players know themselves not to get carried away – their feet will be kept on the ground because the manager won’t allow anything else. That’s one defeat in 13 league games – we finished the season strongly. ‘The opening game was a bit disappointing – that was a last minute winner again but hopefully we’ve got a lot to look forward to.’

  • Just saw a stat this time last season we were on 9 pts from 5 games so we’ve potentially made a better start then last season.

  • I have to agree with Jose. Chelsea played well, and that is what makes the win more satisfying. We didn’t beat a Chelsea side that were off colour, we beat a Chelsea side that played well. We were under the cosh for long parts of the game but defended superbly. More important, the players (and crowd) seemed to have the belief we could win whereas other games against the top four we have almost gone in with a ‘damage limitation’ attitude and hoped for a draw. I felt a bit sorry for Gary Cahill, missing out on a starting place, but MON is paid to make difficult decisions and he got that one right along with a lot others!

  • Pking – how is 7 pts from 4 games better than 9 pts from 5 games last season? With 3 pts next game, we’ll have 10pts from 5 games and IF we can maintain that form, it will definitely be a Top6 finish with 76pts for the season.

  • not awe inspirng (apart from Laurson’s awesome prescence) but the execution of a well thought out plan was superb! MON is a genius!

  • “were gonna win the league, were gonna win the league, and now your gonna believe us” Sorry, what was Barry on about?
