Martin O’Neill – Slip Sliding Away

Martin O’Neill is a worried man(ager) as he fears a slide admitting with the lack of strength in depth ‘a slide we might find difficult to arrest’.

Despite only two losses in 16 games, O’Neill is worried by the amount of draws and told said in an interview with the Guardian:

‘Naturally I am very pleased we are in a better position than we could have imagined. The players have been fantastic, have put their heart and soul into the games. Sitting sixth, seventh, eighth, whatever is better than being fourth or fifth from bottom but I just think we are wary. We can get well and truly beaten in a few games and there might be a slide we might find difficult to arrest, so the more points we get now the better for us.’

  • No… please no negativity Mr MON. We have had enough of that to last a life time. Mondays win against Sheff Utd should act as a springboard up the table, so no talk of sliding please.

  • i think what he’s saying is that we’ve got games coming up that he doesn’t expect us to win. i.e. Man U x3 !!

  • The players will no doubt be pulling out all of the stops to ensure that once January is through, and any new arrivals are safely through the entrance door, that their places are not up for grabs. That should ensure a reasonable points haul between now and the new year. It is though fairly easy to appreciate and understand where MON is coming from.

  • what worries me is we always seem to have a winter slump, hopefully we’ll hold our own up until we spend 20 quadzillion pounds in January.

  • I hope he aint catching the David O’Leary Virus but I too am concerned about the draws draws only keep us out of the relagtion zone draws do not get us into europe and we really need to win a game now.

  • theres a difference about MON and He that shall not be named christo, MON is being honest, HTSNBN used it as an excuse. Fact is, we do have a small squad and injuries and illness are more common at this time of year. include the fact that within our squad we have baros, who doesn’t look like he cares.

  • just his way, publicly cautious, does not want to build up hope, but will be expecting results in private. I think you’re right Glen they all know there is a fight for places coming up, so we should be in for some good games, Villa all the way.

  • Honesty at the Villa, now theres a novelty, MON knowd we are higher in the league than we deserve to be, but If you get the points you get the position. Maybe he is just guarding against us getting carried away by the brilliant start.

  • He’s warned us virtually since day one that the picture hasnt been quite as bright as it appears to be. Think we all got a little bit carried away.
