Villa Take The Bragging Rights For Now, So Who Next – Match Stats

After the disappointing VAR-enabled defeat against Manchester City, Aston Villa were looking to build on our continued small positives in the campaign of 2019/20 as we welcomed Wolverhampton Wanderers to Villa Park for our EFL Cup fourth round clash.

There was some expectation that both sides would rotate the first team pack for this one, but with Liverpool up next for us, in some ways securing progression and bragging rights was slightly more important here in the grand scheme of things.

It was a bright start from our second string and we more than edged Wolves’ backup on the night, taking the lead just ahead of the half hour mark as El Ghazi finished off a lovely bit of play. Clear cut chances for us were hard to find though really and within ten minutes of the restart the visitors had a stroke of luck with a questionable offside to level matters up.

Ahmed Elmohamady restored the advantage three minutes later and we were looking for three.

Sadly we didn’t get it, but we won, plenty of positives and plenty this group can improve upon with game time and experience, so got to be happy with that.
