Martin O’Neill has hinted that former Rangers star Carlos Cuellar and ex Newcastle winger James Milner’s times may have come as he looks forward to next Saturday’s important Premiership game against Portsmouth.

With both Milner and Cuellar coming on as subs in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea, it seems they might well have forced their way into contention with the Villa boss saying:

‘My thinking has not changed. I`ve made my views clear on the two lads, I think they are excellent, they are great acquisitions and it was difficult to change a winning side before. They appreciated that. James and Carlos are quality players.’

And on the Pompey game he added, ‘I hope that frigging bell ringer doesn’t come as I’d like to stick that bell where the sun don’t shine’…. on no, hang on, that is me, MON said:

‘Portsmouth is absolutely vital. It is a really, really big game. They have won a couple themselves and will be feeling a lot better than they did at the start of the season. Now they have a bit of momentum going. They can score goals, they are strong and I think it will be a great game. They did brilliantly last season by winning the FA Cup. Harry has done a fantastic job.’

And warning, ‘Crouch and Defoe are really good players. I think they`ve proved that before – Crouch with Villa and Liverpool.’ Hmmm, makes you wonder, being good players and all, why they aren’t possibly lining up IN the claret and blue, Defoe I think might have been the difference between 4th and 6th last season. Then again, what do I know (please don’t answer that, I have a very fragile ego!)
