This is good news. Martin O’Neill is quoted in the press and the official site as saying Villa are deadly serious about the FA Cup and he will field a strong team against Gillingham showing the oldest Cup competition in the world due respect.
‘We’re going fine in the Premier League and the UEFA Cup is not until February. I’ve spoken to the players and they really do want to get through in the FA Cup. We’re ready to go.’ Adding, ‘The FA Cup has taken a back seat recently with the Champions League being the Holy Grail, but it’s still a great competition.’
On the official site he says ‘The FA Cup has a fantastic tradition and history – it’s just a great competition….For us, it would be great to do well. It hasn’t been great news in recent seasons. The football club reached the cup final in 2000 and we have been nowhere near since.’
And on Sunday’s game (1:30pm kick off) ‘At Gillingham, we want to compete and win the game. We will treat the competition with all the dignity it deserves.’
Vital Villan already reported yesterday that Curtis Davies has called on Villa to end our habit of being giant killed in the Cup and to secure a comfortable win against Gillingham. Davies said when speaking on the official site that he and the team are determined to put things right after losses to Leicester and QPR in recent seasons and he has said that the FA Cup is on our priority list this year.
