Phil Mepham, head of Communications at Villa, says Villa aren’t going to panic buy or rush in the transfer market.

He told the Birmingham Mail that activity is due in the next few weeks but if they have to wait to get the right players, they will.

With Villa fans trawling the net to find even the slightest hint of a transfer – and mostly coming up with David Villa links to Chelsea it must be said! – Phil has explained:

‘It would be fair to assume that he would want the crux of his additions in by July 4 when the players return. But he is a manager who would rather not rush things through. If it is the right bloke then he would wait until, say, July 18. There is no desperate rush to get things sorted. It is all very relaxed.’

Relaxed? Relaxed? We’re on bloody tenderhooks here Phil!!!!!!! 😉

He was also asked if Martin O’Neill was refusing to pay inflated prices to which he replied: ‘It absolutely could well be. There are loads of possible reasons why. He may have identified the players he wants and may already know that they want to come, and there may be ones he has identified who don’t. Maybe he is waiting for those who do to get back off holiday – I don’t know. At the moment things are extremely quiet.’

And on the supposed Nigel Reo-Coker bid, Mepham has agreed with West Ham boss Alan Curbishley saying there has been no bid to date adding ‘If there was ever any credence to the Reo-Coker reports that Villa wanted to sign him, then that would not happen anyway while he is away with the under-21s.’

So there you go, patience is the cross Villa fans (and lets be fair, fans at most clubs really) will just have to bear a bit longer! Anyway, I’m on holiday June 26th and every time I go away, loads happens at Villa, so you’ve only a week or so to wait, or if you are that desperate, have a whip round and send me away earlier!

  • In respect of the Reo-Coker thing, I would assume that you dont put an official bid in untill you both know the figure, so I would assume that Fitzgerald would talk to eggman and they would agree a figure and then the official bid would be sent after all the discussions……so being as Nigel is away on international duty they will be concentration on other targets for now……

  • Patience is a virtue, people are coming, its just that negotiations wont start until most players come off their holidays. Exiting things are going to happen after the 18th June…….watch this space

and p.s don’t listen to the rumors, two world class players are on their way, maybe three

  • well go on holiday then fear!, if it always happens when your away then pack and get on your jollies!! we want to know who were signing and its YOUR fault we have to wait!!!

  • Its a pain, but much better than wasting the money.O Leary would have signed a dozen players or so by now.

  • This seems to be the right attitude; I’d rather have them be smart about who they bring in rather than just throw money at people so that something is happening.

  • Like Portsmouth and West Ham seem to be doing…bidding for anyone thats available and think about the consequences later (too many players, too high a wage bill etc. etc.) i think we’ll be smart and go for players we need whilst not being held to ransom.

  • I think that all supporters have been expecting signings since the final whistle went at The Reebok back in May. We’re competing with, and for, the big boys now, not shopping in the discount/damaged goods aisle. Biting our nails and tearing out our flowing locks we all may well be, but I think we all firmly believe that quality will be arriving, and soon. It’ll be worth the wait, I’m confident on that score.
