Villa Transfer Speculation Frenzy!!

Right, this is the week we have to get 3-4 (at least) signings in and the press seem to be on a transfer rumour feeding frenzy, lets just hope the club is on a transfer spending frenzy!

One report says that Villa will bid £20million for Spurs striker Jermain Defoe and West Bromwich central defender Curtis Davies. I can’t see how that adds up though? Defoe is an England striker, surely he’d cost more than £10million? That said, he is on the last year of his contract, if he continues to refuse to sign a new one, then he could walk for nothing next summer, something the board of Spurs will avoid at all costs. The Star claim Villa will bid £11million, hope it is true, hope we get him as he has more change of getting to 20 goals for us than any of our current players. However I can see Manchester United sneaking in and grabbing him.

Davies has been linked all summer long, there must be some sticking point and you can only assume it is the price. So if he is considered too expensive, surely we move on and look at the next target?

Well, according to some papers, we have moved on as O’Neill refuses to pay £10million for the Baggies defender. The latest links claim we are now looking at bidding £4million for Fulham defender Zat Knight, who as it happens is a Villa fan. The giant defender was linked during the O’Leary reign as well. I’m not convinced he is the next step up or European standard, but hey ho, suck it and see as they say! Strange link though, the 27-year-old has only just recently signed a new three year deal at Fulham.

Another report suggests we’ll bid £7million for Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker. I thought his agent had ruled out a move?

The Guardian claim that we are also after Tottenham winger Wayne Routledge who has struggled to hold down a place in the Spurs side since moving from Crystal Palace. Routledge has spent most of his White Hart Lane career on loan at Pompey and Fulham. Not sure what is wrong with him, always looks a very handy player to me, maybe the Spurs fans will pop on and let us know in the article comments why he hasn’t had a run for their team. I know an injury set him back when he first moved, but what happened then!?
