You can tell deadline day is looming as some in media land panic to repeat well trodden rumour mill speculation about players Aston Villa should have absolutely no interest in and that applies to the latest round of James Tavernier speculation.

Back in early June we last found ourselves linked with the 27-year-old Rangers fullback and just as he wasn’t a Dean Smith sort of signing back then (or in the previous months were we were linked with him) he isn’t suddenly now, even if Football Insider make him their prime candidate to succeed Ahmed Elmohamady given the additional lazy reporting we’ve seen linking him with Newcastle United to team up with Steve Bruce once again.

With talk of a £10million fee that would further rubber stamp the fact we’d have no interest in him for me as we’d be looking for better value, and although he’s done well in terms of his goalscoring and assist record at Rangers, we’d have better options that suited our philosophy better.

Hopefully we can put this piece of speculation to bed once and for all when the deadline slams shut.
