Martin O’Neill isn’t unduly worried at the challenge of attracting quality players to Villa Park despite the fact, unless we fluke entry via the fair play league, we won’t be in Europe next season.

He said: ‘I still think our chances of attracting quality players here next season are remarkably good, regardless of whether we’re in Europe or not. If we can attract players of the calibre of John Carew , then I don’t think it will be difficult. John saw our position in the table before he signed, but he still came here. He believes we are capable of playing European football, but he didn’t necessarily think we would achieve it this season.’

‘And if he came, I think others will follow him. I have no worries about being able to sign very good players. It’s not a problem. That’s what gives me a bit of confidence that, despite our results, the profile of the club will improve. If I wanted slow evolution I would work with this group of players for another season. Fine in theory, but it doesn’t work in practice. I hope some of our younger players will improve next season and be complemented by a few others.’

Agreed, we don’t want anymore wasted seasons, not O’Neill or the new boards fault, but patience is bound to wear thin with the Villa faithful, we’ve had years of nothing and now we have a sniff of what might be coming, we’d like it yesterday! This season has been disappointing, if we had similar next season it would be disastrous for ticket sales and morale. Some of our players, in my ever so humble opinion, try hard but are not the grade. Major changes not just ‘a few others’ is what is required!

  • I think the days of players only going to clubs playing in Europe went when clubs started paying massive wages, who gives a flying fart about European football when your picking up £40,000 a week.

  • Very true col8, Its all about the money these days, none of the players play with real heart

  • We won’t attract any quality if we’re not in the premiership. We need another 6 points at least – From what I’ve seen so far its not going to be easy

  • Spot on Col. I hope Martins right, cause on the evidence of recent showings we need three or four more quality players to even begin to compete.

  • any quality player watching the dross we put out on Sunday won’t be coming to villa park anytime soon.

  • yeah no decent player with ambition will sign for villa, just the money grabbers who never give 100%. Even mid -table looks ambitious for over-paid championship players.

  • 3 goals in last 6 games says it all. We need to start scoring quick even under o’leary i felt we had goals in us i don’t anymore. I actually want the season to end already after so much false hope. UTV come on lads turn it round by sticking it to the toffees.

  • The boys just seem to lack a bit of confidence, instead of booing the players, a bit of encouragement would be better. Midfield doesn’t seem to be working, perhaps it is time for luke to come back in.

  • Luke definitely deserves an opportunity morky13villa. I cant quite understand why he hasn’t been given a run. We have to go into games making a serious attempt to pick up three points, draws are not really any good to us right now. We’re getting a little bit too close to the drop zone for comfort.
