Villa youngster is back for keeps

Aston Villa goalkeeper Scott Carson answered his critics in fine style at the weekend with his best score of the season in the Actim Index, the official player ratings system of the Barclays Premier League.

Carson was lambasted after his early blunder against Croatia contributed to England being dumped out of Euro 2008 but he responded with a 27-point haul in the 3-0 win at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

It was the highest score for a goalkeeper so far this season and saw the 22-year-old climb 20 places to 49th overall.

He was joined in the Actim Index team of the week by defender Olof Mellberg, who earned 42 points, also his best score of the campaign, at The Riverside.

Analysis of all Premiership games is taking place throughout the season and the players in the Actim Index Team of the Week are:

Scott Carson, Aston Villa, 27 points
Olof Mellberg, Aston Villa, 42 points

Phil Neville, Everton, 32 points
William Gallas, Arsenal, 31 points
Stephen Warnock, Blackburn Rovers, 28 points
Tim Cahill, Everton, 52 points
Steven Gerrard, Liverpool, 49 points
Niko Kranjcar, Portsmouth, 43 points
Martin Petrov, Manchester City, 38 points
Dirk Kuyt, Liverpool, 36 points
Diomansy Kamara, Fulham, 35 points

The Actim Index is calculated using a unique mathematical formula that rates each player’s contribution be it goals, shots, passes, dribbles, tackles, crosses, saves, clearances, blocks, interceptions, assists, clean sheets, time on the pitch or number of points gained by the team with marks deducted for red and yellow cards.
