Aston Villa youngster Shane Lowry has sadly missed out on a place in the Australia squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

Lowry, 20, has had an impressive 6 months or so on loan to League 1 promotion winners Leeds United and this was enough to get himself a place within the training squad for the socceroos, however his performances seemingly have been inadequate as coach Vim Verbeek chose others ahead of him for first ever African World Cup.

Lowry had previously represented the Republic of Ireland at U17 and U21 level before switching allegiance in order to play for the nation he was born in. He has however yet to make any distinct inroads into the squad.

Whilst no doubt a bitter blow to the defender, I am quite confident that even being named in the provisional 30-man squad will be a boost for a player who is clearly one for the future, given his two-year contract extension that was signed the day he received that Ozzie call up.
