Plenty of Villa old boys out today praising the arrival of Paul Lambert:

Villa legend Allan Evans has told Allan Evans Total Overhaul Needed AND Patience

Tony Daley has told www.dailystar.co.uk

“Aston Villa are one of the big clubs in England with a superb ground, a brilliant fan base and a rich history. Now, instead of doom and gloom surrounding Villa Park, there is a new mood of optimism to go with those attributes. Stung into action by the McLeish mistake, Lerner has pulled off a masterstroke. I can`t wait for the new season to start.”

John Deehan, currently director of football at Plymouth Argyle, told www.sundaymercury.net

“I think Paul is a very good manager, and his record proves that. But as for taking this club forward, a lot will depend on what Mr Lerner decides to do. He needs to back him in the transfer market there`s no doubt about that because this squad needs improving. The club needs to bring in some experienced players, the type that you would class as Premier League standard who can supplement the squad as quickly as possible.”

He adds Darren Bent was a massive signing and that they need to build the team around him (that will please Gabby!)

“Hopefully Mr Lerner will see the need for improvement and back the new boss.”

And on his style he added, “He managed to build a side at Norwich that was entertaining at home and that is, more than anything, what the majority of Villa supporters want. Their grievance last year was that they were too cautious at Villa Park.

Thank goodness someone understands why we were fed up last season!!!

Meanwhile Ugo Ehiogu, whose name I have always struggled to spell (!) has spoken to www.talksport.co.uk (that links to the radio interview)

He also warns it won`t be instant, fans need patience with Lambert.

“He`s got to be given time because there is quite a big rebuilding job that needs to be done. I think it is probably going to be one year to 18 months before he is able to put a stamp on the team to say this is my team and this is how I play.”

And on the ruination of the game (I`m sorry, but it is!) “The Premier League has changed so much. If you look at Man City winning the title on the last day in the last two minutes and how much have the spent to win the title?”

And a non Villa boy but a legend in the game, German boss Ottmar Hitzfeld who took Lambert from Motherwell to Borussia Dortmund told www.mirror.co.uk, amongst others,

“As a player, Paul always thought like a coach. He was a leader. I have followed his career since. What was most critical was that Paul was a very good team player. That is one of the most important qualities as a coach and manager of a team. Paul was one of the players responsible for keeping a good mood in the dressing room before a game, and after a defeat he was one of those who knew how to address a situation or any problem.”

And then I had my say! LOL

Press Association Sport understands Lambert has signed a three-year contract with the midlands club. It is believed Villa has not paid any compensation after Lambert resigned as Norwich City boss on Thursday having been refused permission to speak to Villa.

Jonathan Fear, of the leading Villa fans website ‘Vital Villa’, said:

‘I think it is a smashing appointment. He was the number one target and they were prepared to wait for him. It is a good, solid appointment and he can have a look from top to bottom at what is needed at Villa.”

‘He has worked wonders at every club he has been at. We had a poll on our site of 14 managers and he led from start to finish as the first choice. ‘It is the opposite of last year and we’ve got a fans’ favourite coming in this time.’
