Villa’s title winning Reserves will be gunning for a fourth consecutive league title this season, and open their campaign against Manchester City.

The away fixture against City takes place on August 31 and no doubt the lads will be well up for it after the disappointment of losing last years league play off final.

Seemingly as the Barclays Premier Reserve League wasn’t operating efficiently enough, this year there have been a few changes.

Now the Northern league has been split into two groups, which means the eventual Northern winner will have to face a play off match against the other Northern group’s winner, before reaching the league play off final. But now, despite Villa being placed in the Southern league, which doesn’t have separate groups, Villa will also play against clubs in Northern groups A and B.

Clear as mud isn’t it.

Further changes this year given the unforeseen Reserve clashes with rearranged first team fixtures last season mean some Reserve games have already been planned to take place at Bodymoor Heath. These are presumably behind closed doors as kick offs are pencilled in for 2pm.

However that only affects the Blackpool, Sunderlan, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham and Everton matches. Ok fair enough that is a quarter of the entire fixture list, but like last season the club have very little say in it.

In response to this and the growing interest in the next generation of Villans the official site will be running the match day console for all reserve games and will most probably be showing extended highlights aswell for those who miss the action.
