1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

Saturday 13th May 1989…about tea time.

A mate of mine was a huge fan. One of the few things he knew about his estranged father was that he was a Villa fan so I suppose it allowed him to have a small connection to a man he never truly knew. The trouble was, his mum wouldn`t let him go to Villa on his own (we lived in Nottinghamshire) but she would allow it if I went with him. I was 15 and to be honest I didn`t really follow football that much, it wasn`t that I didn`t like it I just didn`t “get” why people were so crazy about it but that opinion soon changed forever. After an eventful journey and a few near misses with marauding Coventry fans on New Street station we arrived in B6 and I remember seeing the A V floodlights. I remember going through the turnstiles walking up some stairs and finally walking out into the Holte End and seeing the inside of Villa Park for the first time. The stadium was already full and the noise was unlike anything I had ever heard and I remember saying to myself “now I get it”. My mate explained to me that it was the last match of the season and Villa needed to beat Coventry to stay up, the match ended 1-1 but results elsewhere meant West Ham went down instead of Villa and I was absolutely smitten. I could go on and on about that day and I haven`t even mentioned the journey home and the giant Coventry fan who stood in front of me and stopped me from being crushed into a wall when it all kicked off outside but I suspect people may have already stopped reading by now so I`ll keep the rest of my answers as short as possible.

2) What is your favourite Villa moment of all time/most treasured memory?

The story above will always be a treasured memory but I think beating Man U in the League Cup final was special (did we stop them winning the treble that year?) and being in the Holte End when Ronnie Rosenthal had an open net and hit the bar before we went on to win 4-2

3) If you could bring back a former Villa player into this team (at his peak) who would it be and why?

McGrath is an obvious choice given how bad our defence was this season but Paul Merson in his prime (and sober) would just love playing between Westwood and Benteke so I will go with Merse

4) Paul Lambert? Your opinion please?

I like him, not my first choice but then I didn`t really know who I wanted but I think Lerner has finally got the right man at the right time. Not going to make predictions but I must say I`m looking forward to the next few years

5) Best and worst moments of last season?

The Chelsea game easily the worst. Lowtons goal the best

6) Some say last season was a success, others not so much. What is your opinion?

Not a success. We have put the foundations down, now we need to build further to be successful

7) Your opinion of Randy Lerner and the board?

He/They still have my backing, I had my doubts when they took Fergusons opinion over that of the fans but we`ve all moved on from that I hope

8) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?

More strength at the back is a must but there were many times last season where we were screaming out for an Ashley Young type. Someone who gets the ball and runs at people and makes things happen. The nearest we have to that is Nzogbia but he just doesn`t know when to lay it of he just keeps running till he is tackled or runs out of grass. I hope the two Bulgarians we have been linked with can show him how it`s done

9) Which player/s should Villa get rid of this summer?

I will leave that to Lambert. I will support whoever is on the pitch regardless

10) Favourite current player?

I think it might be Guzan at the moment, never heard a bad word said against him as a person and he`s pretty good at that goalie stuff too

11) Who was your first footballing hero and who are your favourite all time player/s?

David Platt was my first hero. Absolutely gutted when he left for Bari. Sadly I can`t say that I care much for him these days.

12) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

Premier: Top ten minimum
FA Cup: who knows, total lottery really
Carling: latter stages or better

13) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?

Do you want General K`s old job? …….erm yea why not

14) Just to change the theme slightly, a snap shot of you outside of football, answer or ignore at your leisure:
(based on our WHO ARE YOU thread!!!)

a) Which celebrity/s would you most like to meet and why? Not really into the whole celebrity thing so I`ll move along
b) Age 38
c) Location: Notts
d) Favourite alcoholic drink: started to like a nice bottle of red lately
e) Favourite non-alcoholic drink: coke
f) Favourite Film/s: Donnie Brasco, Untouchable (A French film from 2011 please look it up if you haven`t seen it)
g) Favourite TV Show/s: South Park, Big Bang Theory
h) Music?: Changes every few weeks, I`ve got Beck in the car at the moment. Roy Harper, Rolling Stones, Donovan, The The, Paul Simon, Beatles, Yes, The Smiths and really liking Mumford and Sons lately
i) Best ever moment in your life: My wife giving birth to another Villa fan about 4 months ago
j) Ambitions: Simply to be as good a dad to my boy as my dad was for me
k) Wise words: Don`t believe everything that you read, especially if it was written by Sir Alex Ferguson

  • love the answer to question one… never seen it that specific before ‘about tea-time’. Classic!

  • Question 1 answer is an absolute classic. Don’t worry about answers being too long – it’s the off-season and we’re all desperate for a good read….

  • Excellent read. How many fans loved David Platt at the Villa, even when he played for Arsenal and Now think he has tainted that hero status by what comes out his mouth…. Same could be said about Dwight Yorke too.

  • been working away from home all week so i’ve only just seen this. thanks for the comments. I couldnt resist stealing the “tea time” line from Life of Brian
